Should I put saline solution directly onto my eye throughout the day?

I just got contacts today and have been doing a little bit of research. I came across a website that says I should put saline solution onto my eye throughout the day. Can I do this? Or is it bad?
Can I put it onto my eye?

Saline is okay, but any drug store sells rewetting drops for contact wearers. Those are better.
