Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture

I want to make a new var in SAS using responses to a group of vars (x1-x16) where if x1-x16=1 then newvar=1?

I have tried using an array, but it doesn’t work–i need to make the new vars all different names –the original question that i want to make the new variables from asked about medical conditions that limit day to day functioning and a person can respond to the question up to 16 times (q1_1–q1_16) with different conditions, i want to capture if anyone reported respiratory conditions and make a var ‘resp’=1 if they did, or heart conditions and make a var ‘heart’ and so on without having to resort to if q1_1=44 or if q1_2=44….etc…then resp=1 if –this should be easy…..i think.

Well I don’t know what SAS is, but maybe this will help:

For multiple answers to multiple questions, you need two arrays of boolean data type. one will be 2-dimensional, the first dimension is for each question asked, and the second dimension is for each time they answered that question. the second array will be one-dimensional and will hold whether or not they answered true even once to that question (equivalent to your ‘resp’=1 or ‘heart’=1 but in this case would be qt[0]=true, qt[1]=true). An easy way (in C) to implement this would be to say (after declaring your public arrays):

for (int x=0, x++, x qt[x]=0;
for (int y=0, y++, y<15) {
if (q[x,y]==true) qt[x]=true;
} }
