How do you go from the stock name to classical name in ionic formulas? Ex:Copper(I) ion -Cuprous ion for Cu+?
Other Examples:
(Fe^2+) Iron(II) ion -Ferrous ion
(Hg^2+) Mercury(II) ion -Mercuric ion
Why does the element’s name change and where does it come from?
Are there any rules for these name changes?
The lower oxidation state usually is formed by adding “-ous” and the higher oxidation state is formed by adding “-ic”.
Ferrous (+2) and Ferric (+3)
Mercurous (+1) and Mecuric (+2)
Other than the general -ous and -ic endings, I don’t think there is a general rule. For example, why is it Ferrous and ferric and not “ironous” and “ironic”…while it is mercurous and mercuric.
