How long do side effects last with anti depressants?

I need to know because i feel like poo. I cant sleep, i have headaches, i keep sweating and to make matters worse the pills have made my balls tender and smaller! I’m only on day 5 on taking the meds.

Your body is warning you that it cannot cope with these chemicals.

Yes, it might get used to it in time and the side effects lessen, but it might go the other way and get worse and you’ll find yourself with akathisia, psychosis, mania, and a host of other mental and physical harmful effects induced by the antidepressant.

If you were in a restaurant and had these side effects after eating a meal, I doubt that you’d ignore it and continue to eat there. Listen to your body.

It is possible to get withdrawal effects after taking antidepressants for a short time and some people get serious withdrawal symptoms after missing only ONE pill – however long they have been taking the antidepressant. Which is one reason people should NOT try tapering off by using the ‘take one every other day’ plan.

You might be able to come off without problems, but its important to know this so that if you stop suddenly and find yourself in trouble you know what to do to stop it getting worse. Some of the murders and suicides and violent behaviour mentioned in one of the answers have been during the period of cold turkey withdrawal.

If you do decide to stop and get some bad effects, then you need to go back on quickly and then taper off slowly and carefully.

I’ve just edited to add (last link in the list) an updated version by the same author which will probably be more useful as more info has become available than there was at the time of the first advice.
