While a lot of energy goes into explaining how skinny guys should exercise and lift weights and also what they should eat rest and recovery often take a backseat. This may be understandable because most guys going from skinny to muscled do not really think about that element much compared to the physical exertion side of things but this does not make recovery time less important just less talked about!
It may be this reason in fact that many may be thinking ‘can skinny guys get muscles?’ as they slave away at the gym and eat delicately balanced diets designed for muscle growth only to find after weeks of effort there is little result. This is because you do not gain muscle when you exercise or even when you eat; you grow your muscles only when you REST.
Fact 1 – Resting builds muscles – When the body is not digesting or lifting heavy weights it has time to divert energy to your muscles to repair and grow them. This is not going to happen without fuel and the workout that activated the muscle growth but only during the downtime does it happen. This also means that if you hit the gym again without being fully recovered then you are setting back your muscle growth as the body goes into activity mode not growth mode!
Fact 2 – Good Sleep is Essential for Muscle Growth – The most important part of recovery though is sleep, about an hour into sleep your body produces growth hormones that are perfect for amazing muscle increase and so poor sleeping habits can be a hindrance when trying to get ripped. It is advised that you should get a full 8 hours sleep every night because of this and also try to go to bed earlier as sleeping late even if you still get 8 hours sleep is not as efficient either.
Fact 3 – Workout Intensity dictates recovery time – The more intense you workout the more punishment and stress you put on your body and therefore the more time it takes to recover, heal and grow. If you are putting in 100% at full speed and really pushing yourself to the absolute minute; you may need 2-3 days off before you hit the gym again for instance while lower intensity workouts might mean you can go 4 times a week.
